Multiple trends are empowering frontline healthcare workers, from mobile healthcare, to cloud computing, BYOD, and social media, they have more options at hand now than any time in the past. When the usability of solutions and security impedes their work, they can be compelled to seek alternatives and workarounds that can drive non-compliance and risk. Examples include use of a personal device with a file transfer app to transfer PHI unencrypted to a co-worker, or texting PHI. A recent global HIMSS security survey shows workarounds using mobile devices can be a major additional source of risk, applicable to personal and corporate provisioned devices and across the spectrum of compute models, including thin client or VDI. More than half of the 674 frontline healthcare workers responding to the survey indicate they use workarounds either every day (22%) or sometimes (30%). Risks associated with workarounds include confidentiality and breach of privacy as well as integrity since data moving in workarounds often doesn’t get updated in official records.
