I need a solution

Hello,

i have AIC XJ3000-3136 shared storage connected to 8 servers (over SAS switch) and now i would like to backup those servers with backup exec 12.5 . I found there is a shared storage licencse but only SAN is mentioned there. Is it possible to do backups over SAS with backup exec 12.5 (i want to avoid using network agents if possible)?

2010 R3 - backup to Disk and deduplication

I need a solution

I have a 1.8 TB disk on the san that the backup server can access, but the job I want to run is about 3 TB of data for a full backup. How do I get the job to run on another disk after the first disk fills up since I cant go over 2 TB of disk space (windows limitation I think)? Also, If the full backup job is about 3TB and I need to to have enough space for a month of full backups every weekend and incrementals during the week and take a full backup at the end of the month and put it on tape for off site storage - how much space woudl I need? I'm using 2010 R3 on W2K8 R2 Thanks.

Endpoint Encryption 8.2.0 MP1

I need a solution

I have a laptop that I decrypted and then re-encrypted because our SEE management server crashed.  I have done eight laptops and this is the last one, but I cannot for the life of me get it to Check-In with the Management server.  I have deleted the registered user and recreated the user hoping that would resolve the issue, but it did not.

I'm fairly new to this software, but like I said - I did decrypt and re-encrypt eight laptops already and was able to resolve the few issues I came across, like a laptop not being in the correct container...blah..blah...

What are some steps I can can to get this laptop to register.  The laptop is a Latitude E5510 running Windows 7 32 bit.

Thank you in advance.

Announcing Managed PKI Service v8.6

Symantec would like to announce the release of Managed PKI Service v8.6, which includes new Managed PKI clients for the Android and the Apple Mac.

Summary of New Features:

  • Transparent certificate enrollment and automation features across all platforms
  • PKI Client for MAC
  • PKI Client for Android (can be downloaded from Google Play)
  • Microsoft’s Auto Enrollment enhancements that provide post processing functionality with fully transparent auto enrollment through PKI Client (not available with Microsoft Auto Enrollment alone).
  • Certificate Management
  • Enterprise Gateway GUI Based installer
  • Allow configuration of KU and EKU extensions

Enhancements such as an Android client are one of the Symantec tools that can help organizations more safely and economically adopt Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) initiatives.   When an enterprise issues a certificate to the user of a self-supplied personal consumer device using Symantec Managed PKI Service they are able to establish a strong and reliable trust relationship with the device and its user.

Feature Highlights:

Transparent Certificate Enrollment and Automation Capabilities Across All Platforms

With the addition of these new clients, along with an existing Windows clients and support for native Apple iOS Simple Certificate Enrollment Protocol (SCEP), Symantec provides full coverage to virtually all popular mobile devices.  Symantec Managed PKI is the only managed service solution to provide such broad client side automation capabilities.

Transparent certificate enrollment: Provides a mechanism for an end user to begin a certificate request process by just clicking on a link in an email and using their browser to fill out a form.

Simplifies the process of producing a certificate request and generating certificate keys for both the administrator and the end user.

Automated client-side post processing:   MPKI clients can automatically configure the android operating system and the android application for which the certificate was created to use the certificate.

Greatly improves what is historically the hardest part of certificate management lifeycles – making the certificate work in client applications once the certificate is delivered – with the effect of lowering support costs and speeding up deployment.

Automatic certificate renewal:  When a user or device certificate expires the PKI client can automatically and transparently renew the certificate on the user’s behalf.

Ensures business continuity by preventing users’ certificates to expire and thus prohibiting them from accessing the services and applications the certificate allows them to use.

PKI Clients for Android and Mac

The new PKI Clients for Android and Mac make digital certificates transparent to end users.   For example, in the case of the new Android PKI client, when a certificate is delivered to an Android device, the PKI client will automatically store the certificate in a secure place on the device and then configure the application to use the certificate.  In addition, the PKI client will automatically detect when a device or user certificate is going to expire, and renew the certificate on the user’s behalf.

By simplifying some of the more difficult aspects of certificate lifecycle management – such as configuring an end user device to use the certificate, Symantec helps lower management costs and makes it easier to scale a deployment.

The Android PKI Client can be downloaded from Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.symantec.android.pki.client.application&feature=search_result

An Administrator Screen indicates the use of the Android Client for end user enrollment.

Microsoft Auto Enrollment Enhancements

Previously Microsoft’s Auto Enrollment would deliver a certificate, but the end user was required to configure its use by application (VPN client, Wifi Client, S/MIME Client, etc).  With Managed PKI v8.6 the PKI Client provides this service transparently for the user - across a heterogeneous platform and browser environment.  Microsoft Auto Enrollment is limited to the domain joining Microsoft clients.

Certificate Management Enhancements

V8.6 certificate management enhancements provide Administrator’s with insight into certificates associated with various filters as seat pools/ users/ certificate profiles/ etc. to perform certificate lifecycle operations.

Examples:

  1. An Administrator may login to PKI Manager and search for all certificates associated within a seat pool at the top level account, as well as all subaccounts. It is then possible to revoke certificates individually for any certificate in the list.
  2. An Administrator may login to PKI Manager and search for certificates associated with a particular certificate profile for a subaccount only.

Enterprise Gateway GUI Based installer

An Administrator may now use the GUI-based console for Installer to install the Enterprise Gateway; therefore it is no longer necessary to run any command line utilities or scripts.   This reduces the installation time and increases productivity on the enterprise side.

Allow Configuration of KU and EKU Extensions

This offers flexibility to the Administrator to display KU and EKU values of choice (certain values may be locked due to best practices) for various certificate profiles.  For example, the secure sign in certificate profile can only display Client Authentication in key usage and others are optional thereby keeping the certificate details clean.

Software Update Restart Deferral notification needs to have defer option selected by default instead of "restart now"

The Software Update Restart Deferral notification needs to have the "Remind later in" option selected rather than the "Restart Now" option; see the attached screenshot. The current setting is causing problems for users who accidently hit spacebar or Enter before reading the notification, resulting in a loss of their data when the computer restarts.

Best practices for failover without heartbeat

0

I need a solution

I dont think there is a solution to this, becuse it would violate HA, but I need to ask the question.

Prerequisite: HA Setup is up and running.

Steps:
1). Unplug the heartbeat cable. (eth1)
2). Unplug/failover the primary system.

Secondary system does not come up without manually enabling the autodisable on
the faulted primary.

They want the secondary system to come up. Automaticly.

Is this possable? is it recomemned?

Windows search

I need a solution

Hi, I'm using Outlook 2010, Win7, EV10 SP1 backend, outlook add-in 10SP2.  I have a virtual vault set up.  When I go to Start, and search for something, it brings up Outlook message, vault cache, and files and programs with that term.  If i select vault cache, it displays all the possible hits in a window.  When I single click and item, the preview pane does not display a preview, it says "no preview available" or "this file can't be previewed".  The policy is set to display 128 characters as a preview with full indexing.

I did a search on this site and noted some people were running PGP addins which caused a similar issue, but I'm not running this.

I have a feeling the issue might be to do with the vault cache being unable to render messages into the preview pane in Windows?  I do note that part of the result has a small preview highlighting the terms that were searched on, but this is not part of the preview pane.

Is this by design?  Any ideas?

Thanks.

Capture/Distribute Personality Console Access

I need a solution

In SMP 7.1 SP2, is there any guidance on the privileges/permissions required so a non-Symantec Administrator role is able to capture and distribute personalities from the console?  I managed to get the commands to display in the Actions menu although don't have the permissions right as I'm getting an error message saying "You currently do not have sufficient rights to perform this action".

Would be nice to have a listing of all necessary rights for specific console actions although I have yet to come across such a document.  Also, not too efficient if everytime I have to guess on what permissions are required whenever I need to add more actions to a role.

Altiris Patch Management 7.1 for Windows - Installing Service Packs

0
0
I need a solution

I need to make sure I understand something about Altiris Patch Management 7.1 sp2.

I only have Patch Management and I do not have the full Client Management Suite.  In particular, I do NOT have software management.

Using Patch Management for Windows, I can see the Service Pack bulletins from Microsoft.  For example "SBS-windows6.1-KB976932" with a severity of "unclassified" is in the Patch Remediation Center.

Here is the problem.  When you run compliance reports, there is not a way to show service packs vulnerable.  I think this is true for all of the severity = unclassified bulletins.

Since these bulletins do not show as a vulnerability, is there really a way to deploy the patch to a machine using Patch Management?

Without Software Management, I cannot really think of a valid way to distribute the bulletin.  Even if I create a policy and target it to a machine that needs the service pack, nothing happens (probably because there is not "vulnerability" per se).

When I look in the 7.1 Patch Management users guide it says you CAN deploy the service packs with Patch Mgmt.  I cannot figure this out.

Can someone set me straight?  Am I doing something wrong or do I simply need to buy the Software Management piece to get the ability to deploy the "unclassified" bulletins?

Thank you,

Scott

WDE on MAC Book Pro very very slow to encrypt drive

I need a solution

Is anyone else have this problem:

We recently upgraded to PGP 10.2.1MP4 so we could upgrade to Mountain Lion. In order to install this version we had to fist decrypt the drive. After the drive was decrypted we upgraded the version of PGP to MP4 and also upgraded the Mac Book Pro to Mountain Lion. Everything seemed to go fine until we started to re-encrypt the drive. Before the upgrade when we first encrypted the drives it took between 8 - 10 hours to encrypt a 750gb drive that was around 50% full. Now with the new version it is showing between 2 0 48 days for the encryption to finish. So far it has taken around 8 hours 8GB.

So far we tried this on three Mac Book Pros. The time between the laptops seems to vary. One laptop has encrypted about 40GB in 10 hours, one laptop took around 8 hours to encrypt around 8GB, and one just started and shows around 17 days left to encrypt. All the laptops are quad core i7 processors with 8GB of ram.

Even the laptop that seems to be going the fastest is still taking around 10x longer to encrypt then the previous version of PGP that we were running.

i have a solaris 10 master and windows 2008 r2 media server. 2 exchange 2010 clients forming a dag.. All the servers and clients are on nbu 7.1.0.3
The master and media servers are installed using the backup interface name while the policy needs to be configured using the prod name of dag. While running backup i can see job details showing bpbrm started however i dont see the process on the media server nor is there any logs generated. The job eventually fails with error 58 and final error code 26. The name resolution works as expected and even nbdna does not show any errors.

Installation Error for Endpoint Encryption

I need a solution

I'm trying to install the Client Package for Endpoint Encryption on our Windows XP laptops.  The Framework package installs just fine, and a password only (not using tokens) Client package installs just fine.  But when we try to set the package up for Token authentication capabilities, we get the error:  "Error 25002: Cannot export settings to client database from settings file"

Anyone seen this before or know a remedy?  We're stuck here since if we can't install the client we can't use the program...

Cannot automate restore with a spanned image file

I need a solution

Hoping to get some help here as Symantec's own support system failed me again.

I'm trying to automate recovery using MS-DOS and Ghost 11.0.1(Part of GSS 2.0). We need to be able to boot from a flash drive and restore the image from that drive. I currently have the system booting from the drive and into ghost. The recovery starts, but stalls when looking for the next file in the span. I'm using the following switches:

-clone,mode=restore,src="c:\image\rad.gho",dst=2 -sure

The Image files all are located in the directory "C:\Image" with File names of RAD.GHO, RAD001.GHS and so on. After selecting the first span (RAD001.GHS) the system will find the rest of the spans by itself(there are 5 files total, 4 spans and the parent .GHO). When Ghostcasting the same image, ghost runs just fine.
